High pressure will continue to build over the area, with another very hot day expected Friday in most areas. Heat Index Values—air temperature and humidity—are expected to reach or exceed 105 degrees in some locations in Los Angeles Friday, and over 100 in some lower mountain elevations.
The Excessive Heat Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. PDT Thursday, August 9, through 8 p.m. Friday.
THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A DANGEROUS SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE POSSIBLE.
AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING MEANS THAT A PROLONGED PERIOD OF HOT TEMPERATURES IS EXPECTED. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS…STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE…STAY OUT OF THE SUN…AND CHECK UP ON RELATIVES AND NEIGHBORS.
NEVER EVER LEAVE CHILDREN… THE ELDERLY OR PETS IN ENCLOSED AUTOMOBILES…EVEN FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. EVEN IF THE WINDOWS ARE PARTIALLY OPEN… TEMPERATURES CAN QUICKLY RISE TO LIFE-THREATENING LEVELS.
TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS IN SHADED OR AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENTS. ANYONE OVERCOME BY HEAT SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION. HEAT STROKE IS AN EMERGENCY . CALL 911.
