Saturday in the Park (Sorry): LA Dodgers Stop the Chicago Cubs 3-1

(Full disclosure: This was an earlier game than usual, so we missed our regular interview with Manager Don Mattingly. We’ll chat with him after tonight’s game.)

The Dodgers, locked in a tight race with division rivals San Francisco and Arizona, take on the Chicago Cubs. First pitch 6:10 p.m.; 76 degrees under clear skies.

First Inning:

Top

Starlin Castro out at first.

Darwin Barney grounds to first.

Anthony Rizzo strikes out. Cubs go 1-2-3.

Score: Chicago 0, Dodgers coming up.

Bottom:

Shane Victorino flies out to left.

Mark Ellis flies out to right.

Matt Kemp out at first. Dodgers go 1-2-3.

Score: Dodgers 0, Chicago 0.

Second inning;

Top:

Alfonso Soriano flies out.

Jeff Baker strikes out.

Wellington Castillo grounds out to first.

Score: Dodgers 0, Chicago 0.

Bottom:

Andre Ethier pops out to short.

Hanley Ramirez flies out to deep center.

James Loney flies out to third base.

Score: Dodgers 0, Chicago 0.

Third Inning:

Top:

Joe Mather flies out to short right.

Luis Valbuena walks.

Chris Volstad sacrifices Valbuena to second.

Starlin Castro out at first.

Score: Dodgers 0, Chicago 0.

Bottom:

Hairston grounds to third.

A.J. Ellis flies out.

Pitcher Clayton Kershaw gets the Dodgers’ first hit, a single to center.

Shane Victorino out at first.

Score: Dodgers 0, Chicago 0.

In a relatively quiet match, there is still no score going into the fourth inning.

Fourth Inning:

Top:

Darwin Barney singles to first.

Anthony Rizzo forced at first, Barney beats the throw to second.

Soriano doubles home Barney. Chicago runners on second and third, and leaning.

Jeff Baker strikes out.

Wellington Castillo flies out, ending the threat, but the Cubs go ahead 1-0.

Bottom:

Mark Ellis singles to right.

Matt Kemp sends an 0-1 pitch out past the center field wall, scoring Ellis. It’s Kemp’s 16th homer this year.

Andre Ethier walks.

Hanley Ramirez doubles out to first, as Ethier is shot down at second.

James Loney singles up the middle.

Jerry Hairston Jr . grounds out to second.

Score: Dodgers 2, Chicago 1.

Fifth Inning:

Top:

Joe Mather thrown out at first.

Luis Valbuena walks.

Chris Volstad sacrifices, sending Valbuena to second.

Starlin Castro strikes out.

Score: Dodgers 2, Chicago 1.

Bottom:

AJ Ellis grounds to first.

Clayton Kershaw gets his second hit of the game, a single past short.

Shane Victorino  grounds out to first.

Mark Ellis strikes out.

Score: Dodgers 2, Chicago 1.

 Sixth Inning:

Top:

Darwin Barney flies out to left.

Anthony Rizzo out at first.

Alfonso Soriano strikes out swinging.

Score: Dodgers 2, Chicago 1.

Bottom:

Matt Kemp goes down swinging.

(The large crowd does a pretty sweet wave here, I gotta say…)

Andre Ethier strikes out.

Hanley Ramirez thrown out at first.

Seventh Inning:

Top:

Jeff Baker thrown out at first.

Castillo singles to short center.

Joe Mather thrown out at first following a bunt to Kershaw.

Kershaw fans Valbuena.

Score: Dodgers 2, Chicago 1.

Bottom:

Hairston Jr. flies out to deep left.

AJ Ellis reaches first on a fly to left center.

Tony Gwynn out on a fielder’s choice.

We just went down to the first base line to shoot a segment. We’re catching up now. The Dodgers have runners on first and second, 1 out in the bottom of the eighth, hoping to snag a couple of insurance runs. (Thanks, Dave.)

Andre Ethier gets aboard for a single. The Doyers have runners on first and third, with two outs.

Hanley Ramirez singles, scoring an additional run.

Final Score: Dodgers 3, Chicago 1. And that’s the final. Chicago drops four in a row, and losing pitcher Chris Volstad has now lost 13 games in a row. Kershaw goes 9-6, and picks up two singles. They’re all back at it again tomorrow afternoon.
