Arts activist Hendrik Stooker, as depicted by artist Peter Hess.

Artist and arts activist and dear friend of this newspaper, Hendrik Stooker, has passed away.

A Highland Park resident, Hendrik was a co-founder of the Arroyo Arts Collective and was retired as gallery curator at Occidental College. He was a highly social presence at art openings in Northeast Los Angeles and beyond. Hendrik was passionate about Highland Park, its arts, its artists and its historic resources.

Hendrik had been battling cancer for some time, but the final stages of his illness were mercifully brief. He was one to tough out life’s challenges alone, but in his final days he received the support of friends and artists Carol Colin and Ted Waltz.

A memorial or tribute has not yet been scheduled. We will post that information when it is available.
